June 1922. Germany’s Minister of Foreign Affairs is shot dead in front of a school in broad daylight, by supporters of the extreme right. One of the students is Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a brilliant young man and theology student. In the aftermath of the Great War, he faces the hardships of another impending world conflict, and problems arise for his denouncing of the abuses of the Third Reich and the general abandonment of the Church towards the persecuted. Those problems push him to work with the military resistance group led by Admiral Canaris. Operation Valkyrie aims to make an attempt on Hitler’s life that could end the war.

But then, Bonhoeffer is accused of attacking Hitler and is imprisoned and tried. He endures the British bombing of Berlin while in prison. This biographical novel goes from Berlin to Rome, from Tubingen to New York, from Barcelona to Munich. It presents a complex spiritual conflict in a story about death, love, loneliness, faith, and deep reflection—in a lost world, but one where there is still room for hope.
