Today, regardless of the causes that gave rise to the constitutional reform on religious matters in 1992, the trail of varied effects is undeniable. For example, churches have legal personality and can legally acquire real estate, as well as establish, either by themselves or in association with other legal or natural persons, institutions for private social work. This legal existence and capacity for certain public actions, the acquisition of property, and the establishment of social organizations constitute a watershed in religious matters in the country, in light of the historical State-church process. The reform thus brought to light a plurality whose existence some already knew, but no one knew how extensive it was within legal opacity, nor how much more extensive it would become after 1992. Those who have most had to struggle with this new situation have been the evangelicals; their historical youth in the country, their recent, distant, infrequent, and even utilitarian relationship with those in government have not provided them with sufficient political culture. Their leadership cadres, accustomed to social visibility but used to the shadows of legality, quite often end up dazzled and blinded by the displays of personal courtesy from skillful officials and without substantive achievements in what matters most. This book presents various historical elements of what has happened with other evangelical experiences in different countries, as well as a series of interviews with different actors in Mexico s socio-religious world.
